Lee's Summit Hospital, a 102-bed acute care hospital,
offers area residents a wide array of inpatient
and outpatient medical and surgical care. With
a patient care staff of nearly 180 and a medical
staff of more than 290 representing more than
40 specialties, Lee's Summit Hospital continues

needs of the community. Lee's Summit Hospital

Since 1930, when the hospital first opened as
Jackson County Hospital, Truman Medical Center
East has been serving the Greater Kansas City
area. The 302-bed primary-care hospital and nursing
home is part of the Truman Medical Center Corp.,
which operates the public health care system for
Kansas City and Jackson County. Truman Medical
Center East is one of the primary teaching hospitals
for the University of Missouri-Kansas City School
of Medicine and Family Practice Residency Program.
The Medical center operates 24-hour emergency
service, the Bess Truman Family Practice Center,
and a dental clinic affiliated with the UMKC School
of Dentistry. In addition, the hospital has an
acute mental health unit and a head trauma program.

Columbia Independence Regional Health Center,
with 366 beds, the largest hospital in Eastern
Jackson County, has been serving the area since
1909. It was bought by Columbia/HCA Healthcare
Corp. in February 1994. The biggest change at
the hospital this year was the addition of Columbia
to its name. Columbia/HCA is the nation's largest
health care provider. It has more than 300 hospitals
and allied health facilities across the United
States and in foreign countries. Columbia Independence
Regional, a not-for-profit hospital, offers comprehensive
emergency, acute-care, outpatient, home-health
and education services. They offer: Senior Friends,
Cardiac services, Trauma services, Obstetrics/gynecological
services, Women's services, Santa Fe Trail Health
Center and HealthLine.

St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs opened its
doors in 1981 and offers a wide range of services,
including Find-A-Physician referral, cardiology,
24-hour emergency, cosmetic surgery, gastrointestinal
laboratory, inpatient and outpatient surgery and
many others. Additionally, the hospital offers
community education programs and a birthing center.
St. Mary's is a 111-bed acute-care hospital that
serves Jackson and Lafayette counties. In 1994,
it become part of the St. Louis based Carondelet
Health System, becoming a sister hospital to the
St. Joseph Health Care Center in Kansas City.
St. Mary's was one of the first hospitals in the
area to offer The Birthing Center, which opened
in 1987. At that time, the center was the first
hospital-based birthing center in Missouri. St.
Mary's also offers home care services. The hospital's
hospice program has been Medicare/Medicaid-certified
and became its own department in 1995. There is
currently one grief support group and others are
being formed. The hospital also offers a broad
range of services with St. Mary's Manor, a 130-bed

they are experiencing. The staff can help in determining
the exact doctor needed. The service lists the
doctor's name, the specialty and office location

the doctor to see if their insurance is accepted.

nurses who refer callers to doctors affiliated
with the Medical Center of Independence and the
Health Midwest System. More than 2,500 doctors
throughout the greater Kansas City area are available
through this service. The service also answers
general health questions. Residents may also call
this service to register for classes in the Health
